We are proclaiming March “the Good Luck month”. Isn’t there a popular book out there right now that says if you concentrate intently on an objective or wish it, it actually happens? Well, we’re saying this month isn’t just for the Irish but it will be everyone’s good luck month.
Speaking of luck, perhaps some of you read the March 2nd New York Times column describing the avalanche of couples looking to book 7/7/07 for their wedding date. After all when will there be another such seemingly auspicious day to say I Do? And it’s even a Saturday! Hotel reservations in Las Vegas are also booming for the same weekend, many times greater than usual. I think this might be a good time to try out the craps table after a long drought.
So, what is it about the number 7? The number 7 has held a special significance and has been considered lucky since the time of the ancient Babylonians. On the other hand, if you’re Chinese, 8 is the lucky number and if you’re in Thailand, the number is 9. I guess lucky numbers are relative.
That got us thinking about other things considered lucky. Here are some of them: Horseshoes; Four-leaf Clovers (our newsletter image of this month); Ladybugs; a Shooting Star; and Knocking on Wood.
Then there are those actions or rituals that all of us have heard about or actually tried to at one time or another. Consider: 1. If you can blow out all of the candles on your birthday cake with one breath while making a silent wish, your wish will come true. 2. If you blow all the fluff off of a milkweed you get a wish. 3. Two people pull apart a breastbone of a turkey or chicken and the one who is left with the longer end will have his wish come true. 4. Tossing salt over your left shoulder if you spill it. 5. Spitting if a black cat crosses your path. 6. Walking into your room backwards, wearing your pajamas inside out, and sleeping with a spoon under your pillow are supposed to ensure that school will be cancelled the next day due to snow or ice. (Never heard of this until recently, but wish I did when I was a kid.)
But remember, You won’t need any of this hocus-pocus this month. We have already declared: This March, 2007 is your lucky month.
