Jersey Mike’s Subs started as Mike’s Subs in 1956 in Point Pleasant, New Jersey. In 1972, a high school kid named Peter Cancro took a job there and loved the authentic submarine sandwiches. When Peter was a senior, Mike’s owner (the third one) decided to sell the store, and Peter Cancro, at 17, jumped at the opportunity, buying the sub shop with partial help from his football coach. He opened a couple more Mike’s Subs, expanding on the idea that continues today of staff interacting in a friendly way with customers. In 1987, Cancro began franchising and changed the company name to Jersey Mike’s Subs. Peter Cancro continues as CEO of Jersey Mike’s Franchise Systems Inc., today, overseeing more than 600 locations open and under development.
